Talking about parenting, it is indeed a complex and challenging experience. We often discuss ways to improve our parenting skills, how to effectively resolve issues that arise with our children, and address many questions that parents have about raising children. However, have we ever considered looking at parenting through the perspective of a child? In this episode of Raising Parents, host Dina Sargeant was joined by Lu Ngo, host of the Happiness Science podcast, “Seroboost”, and the Wellbeing Science podcast, “Doing Well”, on the LMSL Team. Five years ago, Lu made the big decision to choose Melbourne as her second home, moving from Hanoi, Vietnam to pursue her Master's Degree in Project Management. With that background, Lu shared her perspective on her parents' parenting style and the challenges of traditional Southeast Asian upbringing, including emotional trauma caused by her parents' feelings toward each other. Lu emphasized the importance of working on oneself to become a good parent, especially in terms of dealing with past experiences and emotional trauma. They also agreed on how one's parenting style can affect future generations and stressed that parenting is not an easy task for both the parent and the child.Connect and visit Lu’s podcast show on Doing Well at https://www.youtube.com/@wellbeingsciencelabs549/ and SeroBoost at https://www.youtube.com/@happinesssciencelabs4082

Civic engagement is very important for kids because it helps them become responsible and active citizens who care about others. Encouraging children to engage in civic activities from a young age not only instills important values such as empathy and responsibility, but also helps build a sense of belonging and connection to their community. In this episode of Raising Parents, host Dina Sargeant is joined by Diann Cameron Kelly, Ph.D., LMSW from Adelphi University. Currently, Dr. Kelly serves as Associate Provost for Student Success and Professor and former Interim Dean at Adelphi University, also an American Council on Education Fellow at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA being mentored by President Tracy Fitzsimmons. She authored many articles on civic engagement and service learning and is the editor and author of an upcoming book entitled "Volunteering". Dr. Kelly emphasizes the importance of civic engagement in transforming communities and empowering individuals, and how volunteering boosts self-esteem and leads to career opportunities. They also highlight the need for parents to communicate their expectations and involve their children in community service to instill the importance of civic engagement in them. Dr. Kelly also suggests that parents need to allow children to determine their own interests and guide them in developing their civic engagement. Raising a child with a disability can be a challenging and isolating experience. Despite there has been increasing awareness of challenges and needs of families of children with disabilities in recent years, many parents still face significant struggles to navigate systems and services available to support their child. Yet it is important to build a support network and find a community that understands the experience of raising an exceptional child. In this episode of Raising Parents, host Dina Sargeant is joined by Deborah (Debbie) Reber, a parenting activist, bestselling author of “Differently Wired: A Parent’s Guide to Raising an Atypical Child with Confidence and Hope”, speaker, and the CEO and founder of TiLT Parenting, a resource, top-performing podcast, consultancy, and community with a focus on shifting the paradigm for parents raising and embracing neurodivergent children. TiLT Parenting is a resource and community built to provide support for parents who are raising differently-wired children, which their podcast has grown to be a top parenting podcast. Debbie emphasized that parenting an exceptional child is a journey that requires a lot of patience, understanding, and resilience. According to her, parents must learn to recognize and appreciate the strengths and unique qualities of their children rather than focusing solely on their limitations. Besides, Debbie also shared her practices she does to improve her parenting of children with special needs and some good things she found after going through this practice. Parents play a crucial role in preparing their children for the world and helping them grow with a good understanding of various situations, including sexual education. Sexual education may be a sensitive topic, but it is important to maintain open communication with children from an early age to provide them with accurate information and help them grow into responsible individuals. In this episode of Raising Parents, host Dina Sargeant is joined by Kantiana Taslim, a clinical psychologist from Indonesia. Kantiana practices at her clinic, Ohana Space, and covers a wide range of issues, including developmental issues in children, emotional issues in adolescents, and family issues that parents might seek help with. This week's episode is a bit different as Kantiana tried to get an initial understanding of sexual education from Dina. Kantiana then highlighted that in some cultures, particularly in Asia, sexual education is still considered as a taboo topic to discuss in public, even some people are still giggling when they talk about it. Afterward, Kantiana emphasized the importance of children learning about consent, healthy relationships, and gender identity, in addition to the biological aspects of sexuality. She also provided instances of situations and practices when children are involved in talk about sexual education.

Co-parenting refers to a different form of parenting that involves two or more individuals who have chosen to raise a child together. This can include married couples who involve grandparents in the parenting process, single parents who rely on their own parents for support, and divorced or separated couples who work together to raise their children. Many concerns have arisen from this practice of co-parenting, particularly in terms of developing cooperative collaboration. In this episode of Raising Parents, host Dina Sargeant is joined by Kristi Miller, a licensed psychotherapist specializing in co-parenting, adolescents, and families, and also the author of a parenting book titled “Establishing Boundaries with Kids: A Parent’s Guide to Negotiating Limits and Improving Parent-Child Interactions”. Together, they discuss how co-parenting can be beneficial for the children. Other important highlights shared in this discussion include the importance of starting a healthy co-parenting relationship and expert advice on overcoming challenges in establishing a co-parenting relationship.Connect with Kristi through LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristi-miller-447a596/ and visit her work on her official website https://www.solutionsinparenting.com/.

How many of us have subconsciously set a standard of how your child should behave? If you have, chances are you’re not alone. Some parents have desires for their child’s life even before they’re born whether it's wanting your child to live a good life or to go to college when they get older. Conscious parenting aims to teach us to understand that our expectations may not be the reality. In this week’s episode our host, Dina Sargeant is joined by Pediatrician and author, Dr Robert A. Saul, who specializes in teaching parents to raise children to be a positive influence in society. He has studied and practiced his teachings for over 40 years, publishing four books on raising children. Dr. Saul talks about his previous work with children, professionally and personally, and how important it is to first be emotionally self-aware as an individual before being a parent. They talk about how allowing a child to be a child can create a healthy environment for growth, while also teaching them skills of mindfulness at an early age. Visit Dr. Robert Saul’s website at https://mychildrenschildren.com to learn more about him or find his different publications.
