Kantiana Taslim: Importance and Challenges of Children’s Sex Education | Raising Parents #13
Parents play a crucial role in preparing their children for the world and helping them grow with a good understanding of various situations, including sexual education. Sexual education may be a sensitive topic, but it is important to maintain open communication with children from an early age to provide them with accurate information and help them grow into responsible individuals.
In this episode of Raising Parents, host Dina Sargeant is joined by Kantiana Taslim, a clinical psychologist from Indonesia. Kantiana practices at her clinic, Ohana Space, and covers a wide range of issues, including developmental issues in children, emotional issues in adolescents, and family issues that parents might seek help with.
This week's episode is a bit different as Kantiana tried to get an initial understanding of sexual education from Dina. Kantiana then highlighted that in some cultures, particularly in Asia, sexual education is still considered as a taboo topic to discuss in public, even some people are still giggling when they talk about it. Afterward, Kantiana emphasized the importance of children learning about consent, healthy relationships, and gender identity, in addition to the biological aspects of sexuality. She also provided instances of situations and practices when children are involved in talk about sexual education.
